and had the pleasure of eating a bad meal... what fun spending the day and night in the bathroom both ends spewing.... what a nice image! no pictures tho...
have not eaten since, just ordered a bit... hopefully it stays down, dry pasta and bread should be fairly safe i hope....
oh yeah, quite ironic and a load of shit (literally) - i never got sick in indo, where it is all too common, singapore is the clean city....

last surf in bali
was small today, had a few fun small ones at a beach.... yesterday surfed ulu, did not see this, but checked the site baliwaves.com and got a bit freaked out - especially considering i paddled up to temples (which is a long paddle up from the peak across open water without anyone..)
Uluwatu as you can see in these current photos I snapped off down there this morning was breaking very nicely in the 2-3ft+ range on the Main Peak straight out front of the cliff side cafĂ©’s. When I arrived around 9.00AM there would have been lucky to have been 20 surfers in the water and by the time I left at 12.00 noon there would have been around 35. Today’s standout local surfer was an old friend of mine Wayan “Gobleg” Something I haven’t seen at Ulu bfor a long time was a 12-15ft+ Tiger shark cruising around about 300-500mtrs behind the surfers, un be known of course. But I don’t think there was any real danger…. As there were Spanish Mackeral galore jumping out of the water in the same vicinity.
ran out of time for my photo day, maybe ill take a few hours this afternoon to get some shots...
need to d
o some work too though... but can certainly work at night..
well, took one pic - here is me, in focus (somewhat back focused actually, but probably can not tell from this view) scrapping wax fixing boards for tomorrows flight....

nou
There is only one Nation of Ulysses: the seriously unserious, reverently irreverent, amoral moralists whose iconoclastic assault on the received pieties of America place them in the front ranks of social critics. What went into the making of the legend? There was their erudition, their stock of language, their lore in urban sagas, their ransacking of every literature, their knowledge of archaeology and racial history- of kitchen midden and skull measurements. There was the precision with which they knew the homely and workday details of culture as well as the big abstraction, the ease with which they moved about in history from neolithic times to the report of the latest congressional committee.

earplugs, elephants, arms, hands and fans.

I like the top one...
is a crop of the arm one...
not really edited, just a bit on the exposure.
looks like something i picture modern physics to look like...
the earplugs one - when i looked at them, it reminded me of an album cover from sonic youth i just read about - daydream nation, the artwork sold (gerhard richter's kerze (candle)) for like a billion dollars... reminded, but obviously did not come close!
cheech and chong!
no idea how many times ive seen these movies, or listened to those tapes...
now they are really old, but still the voices cracks me up...
off to singapore on halloween then to hk soon thereafter, the hawaii!

about 45 mins to ulu, 25 to canggu...

here is my mode of transport..
renting this beast for the high price of about $3/day....
that is the 5-6, rode it today in about head high surf at the local beach break...
tomorrow should be big - thinking of going to ulu and surfing outside corner in the morning...
or maybe padang.. or maybe impossibles again - that does not seem to get as crowded, for good reason most likely not all of the waves are makeable, and the ones that are not, well, are not the most fun to get demolished by!
maybe i should go to g-land for a week before the winds turn:

surfed racetracks at ulu - was good, but crowded - the peak was probably 15ft on the face or so, where i surfed was probably about 10 or 12 - good, but too many people, and too many of the already too many people speaking portuguese and all the nonsense that goes along with it... wow, if you dont surf you must think i am the biggest asshole to brazilians - but if you have surfed and traveled a bit, am sure you are in complete agreement with these silly words!
here is a spot that is good after the winds change - if i do not head to hawaii in nov, will certainly get my share of surf here!

need to figure out how to surf and shoot...
been surfing a lot but no pix... the camera just does not fit on the motorbike....
ulu was fun today, overhead, but pretty crowded... looks like the swell is gonna jump tomorrow and stay solid for a while... not sure where ill go, maybe give padang a go, but that is ridiculously crowded... perhaps medewi - never been there, heard it can hold size....

still life with computer

notice the non-connection! all too common, but expected...
and a bonus self-portrait, redundant i know... but at least it is something....
and the greatest band in the world (silver mt zion) are playing shows in europe, dl'ing one now
and the last one, or middle depending upon how it is formated, is from west java a few months ago.. i kinda like it...
surfed ulu today
was fun, a few ft overhead at the peak, racetracks a bit smaller, but better...
too many brazzillas, but got plenty, but was forced to do the aggro thing to get waves, which always sort of spoils it a bit... board felt good...
i thought this was interesting:

this dude was surfing a spot i was a few months ago in west java, ive actually never seen anyone surf anything like it before, completely amazing, and he rode a fishquit one day (i have one with me that i tend to ride a bit too often! - did not ride today though, probably tomorrow with the dropping swell)..
thinking maybe going with the 6-8 on sunday when the swell picks up (probably will be double overhead + at some spots - hopefully the conditions will be good as well...).
oh yeah, i forgot, i think that pro snowboarder dude shawn white was surfing at ulu yesterday, the dude with all the red hair, he sort of stands out a bit...
surfed a junky beach break this morning...

on getting established here
the funk of japan lingered, but i think i have it somewhat under control..
got out of sanur, think that is not a place for me...
it is wild, the only thing i can compare my feelings of late would be when i rode my bicycle for 2 months... the huge difference with this is the availability of computer communication (this very thing!)... honestly it may be better without it, that way it would be possible to dive into thoughts that bubble to the surface when really isolated... but now, there are distractions, electric relationships and discussions.. and blogs! so instead of dealing with things, i find myself interacting with people halfway around the world... most with the very best intention, but still, it is just very different being here as opposed to talking about being here....
on my bike ride i was constantly questioning things in my head, really living with my thoughts and exhaustion day to day... but every morning, without fail, i would tackle the task of patching the bike back together... sometimes in the dark in the tent...
now, i wake to immediate interaction from the other side of the world, it is very very strange to be so isolated, yet so involved with people on a day to day level... the other huge difference is i had no money whatsoever at that time, did not pay for anything other than food - snuck into campgrounds, set up my tent right next to another one to give an appearance of a group on a site, and kept the bike in the tent... dont remember every getting caught... beyond that, there were so many times without the possibility of a campground, just had to find somewhere, hoping it was not a bad spot... getting that established before sunset was the key...
i think i am going to try not to be so involved, maybe give the immediate electronic communication with the other side of the world a bit of a rest (well, i do have to work online, but work is another story altogether)..
sunday things sort of shut down a bit, everything is still open, but not completely open...
gonna actively search out a house in canggu, that place really is nice, and there are a few different surf spots right in the area...
